Delta of the river Parnaiba
There are three big rivers in the world with a big delta before they enter into the sea, the Mekong river in Asia, the Nil in the North of Afrika and the River Parnaiba in the North of Brazil, between the states Maranhão and Piauí.
The Parnaiba river breaks up into five channels - like the fingers of your hand - Igaracu, Canárias, Caju, Melancieira and Tutóia. All the channels enter to the open ocean. The mix of dessert beaches with very fine white sand, immense dunes up to 40 meters high, and different islands with forest, mangrows, swaps and carnaúba palms makes you feel good. The delta of the river Parnaiba has 75 registerd Islands with names and 36 virgin islands. Some of them are very small and just with mangroves and swaps - a paradies for the wild animals.
We can
offer you daytrips in small traditional boats to visit the delta and observe
the wonderful flora and fauna. You can learn how to fish a crab, fishing,
eating seafood, have some walks in the dunes or just observe the
animals and enjoy the unbelievable landscape.
