The National Park of Lençóis Marahenses

“A Jewel - one of the most beautiful and unique places in the world.”

The National Park of Lençóis Marahenses is a jewel. These 155,000 ha of blinding up to 50m high white dunes and deep blue lagoons, forming one of the most beautiful and unique places in the world.
Seen from the sky, the scenery is of a rare beauty: the contours of the dunes are formed by large pools of green and blue water that are detained within the dunes from tropical rainfalls. The landscape reminds of a white bed sheet, when seen from above. That is the reason of the name given to the region: "lençóis" in Portuguese means "bed sheets". It is an area of low, flat, occasionally flooded land, overlaid with large, discrete sand dunes - a "sea" of sand dunes that occupies 70 km of coastline and advances 50 km inland. This very special ecosystem is worth to preserve well. The park was created on June 02, 1981. As there is no access by road, the park must be accessed by four-wheel-drive or buggy. Short journeys can be done by foot. The strong heat can be compensated by refreshing baths in the crystal clear ponds or in one of the lakes.
Despite its desert-like appearance, Lençóis Maranhenses records an annual rainfall of 1600mm this is 300 times more than in the Sahara.
During the period of drought, the lagoons evaporate and become completely dried. After the rain-season, the lagoons are home of many fish species, turtles and clams. The mystery lies in the fact that when the lagoons fill up, life comes back, as if they had never left the place. One of the hypotheses to explain the phenomenon is that the eggs of the fish and crabs are maintained alive in the sand and then ‘explode’ during the raining-season.

Caburé
In Caburé there are just four guesthouses and some fishermen. Still now there is just electricity of generators, which is switched off at night and you are alone with millions of stars, sand and water - fresh water of the river and seawater on the other side. Since there is always a light breeze there are no mosquitoes!

Santo Amaro
Santo Amaro is the west entrance of the National Park between São Luis (230 km) and Barreirinhas (100 km). The small village offeres peace and nature pur. In the raining season between february and may it is a very hard way to arrive off-road and by small boats - a real adventure!

Paulino Neves ….
… has about 11,500 inhabitants and is a small and silent village with the nice river Rio da Furmiga which divides the village in the middle. Therefore people have to cross a wooden bridge to reach the other side. It is a beautiful point to visit the small lençóis in the neighbourhood.

Pequenos Lençois
Just after the village of Paulino Neves you reach the dunes of this region. In the raining season it is full of lakes, lagoons and green vegetation, so shepherds let their cattle graze here. Passing the dunes for about 30km along the coastline you arrive in Caburé.

Tutóia (State of Maranhão) /delta do Rio Parnaiba westside
Tutóia is a small fishermen’s town with 42,000 inhabitants including neighbouring villages. It is the west side of the delta and ~ 130 km from Parnaiba. Here we have also many beautiful places. The next small town toward the Lençóis is Paulino Neves, you reach Paulino Neves after ~35 km.
